The discussion on this mailing-list focuses on learning, exploration, experimentation and philosophical investigation. The topic is computing beyond the mainstream. It is a small, familiar community with the ethos of the most excellent BBSs from the early '90s.

On this mailing list we want to focus on our actions rather than on what we avoid. However, criticism must be permitted. Philosophers have a neat trick when they criticise an idea: They define the idea, and then criticise their definition. Done right, we can avoid many of the identities that people might get emotional about. We are also very precise about what we criticise. This is because identifiers often mean vastly different things to people. The search term is "Criticize with Kindness".

The notion of compensating for the inherent complexity of computing may be a reason to engage in philosophical computing. We may be concerned about the fast pace at which our hardware changes. We may want to make hardware more sustainable. We may want to preserve software or hardware for others to experience. We may want to be able to maintain our software, systems and hardware self-reliant; maybe even understand as much of the computing stack as possible. We may be interested in esoteric programming languages, software or hardware. Lastly someone else might simply need no other motivation than curiosity.

By joining this mailing list you agree that we all try to make phicomp an awesome place.

Happy Φc!
